“Blow the Whistle on Asthma”

It is time again for the annual “Blow the Whistle on Asthma” walk! Each year the American Lung Association hosts a walk in hundreds of communities across the United States. The funds raised support ALA’s efforts to search for a cure, reduce suffering and promote awareness through research, education and advocacy at state and federal levels. This year’s walk will be held at the Chalco Hills Recreation Area in Omaha on Saturday, April 28th. The walk begins at 9:00 am.

For those of you that do not know me, I have been a Respiratory Therapist for the past 10 years. The importance of this issue is obvious as a therapist but as a wife and mother of asthmatics it is also very important to me on a personal level. My husband is a life-long asthma sufferer and both of my sons, 4½ and 1½, are also being treated for asthma.

Last year, another therapist and I put together a team, Ambassadors for Asthma Awareness. We had a small team that raised $660.00. This year I would like to grow our team and our donation (our goal is $1000.00) by getting you involved. I am hoping that you will support us by joining our team, signing up to walk or simply making a tax-deductible donation.

Donations and checks should be made to the American Lung Association and can be sent to me or directly to ALA at 7101 Newport Ave, Suite 303, Omaha, NE 68152. Please, make a note which team you are supporting. For additional information on the walk or to make a donation online, you can visit their website at www.asthmawalk.org.

Raffle tickets are also available. The prize: Two round-trip tickets from Midwest Airlines within the continental US. Each raffle ticket is $10.00. The raffle winner will be drawn at the walk. You do not need to be present to win. If you are interested, leave a comment and I will get back to you.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

“Blow the Whistle on Asthma”

Each year the American Lung Association hosts an Asthma Walk in hundreds of communities across the Unites States. The funds raised support ALA’s efforts to search for a cure, reduce suffering and promote awareness through research, education and advocacy at state and federal levels.

As a Respiratory Therapist, I see the devastating effects lung disease has on family and friends, as well as the individuals who are actually diagnosed with it. Not only is this something I deal with on a professional level but it is an issue that is very dear to me personally as well. In 1994, I lost a grandfather to lung disease and recently, an uncle was diagnosed. Both of my sisters as well as my husband and my 6 month old son suffer from asthma.

This year the “Blow the Whistle on Asthma!” walk with be held on Saturday, April 29th at Chalco Hills Recreation Area. As captain of the “Ambassadors for Asthma Awareness” team, I am hoping you will support us by joining our team, sponsoring your own, signing up to walk or simply making a tax-deductible donation.

All donations and checks should be made to the American Lung Association. For additional information or to make donations, visit the ALA’s or the Asthma Walk’s websites.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sleeping Upside Down?

Jamie & I had (actually, are still having) a rather animated debate on whether it is physically possible to sleep upside down for a prolonged period of time. By “upside down”, we do not mean on your stomach but rather hanging like a bat. And by “prolonged”, we mean a full nights sleep; at least 6 hours. We’ve tried searching the web but are yet unable to find what we are looking for. He states that sans any pre-existing medical conditions, it’s fine. I feel it’s physiologically dangerous. In short, he’s says “when you wake up, you’re happy”. I say “if you wake up, you’re happy”. We’d love any thoughts on this, especially if we could be directed to a link with an answer.

delicious library and mediaman

I just finished reading this post over on binary bonsai. This is the first that I have heard of MediaMan, and now I need to make a decision.

I have been slowly and pain-stakingly designing a piece of software to do just this for my personal use. Do I quit, and use MediaMan? I do not like the fact MediaMan ripped off Delicious Library’s UI; even with Delicious Library not making a Windows version.

The lazy part of me says use MediaMan. My gut is telling me to keep on building.

I’m going to go with my gut, even though it may be years before I finish.

instructables

This is probably old news to many of you, but I just found instructables.

This is one seriously cool website. If you are not familiar with instructables, I recommend that you go check them out.

Here is how they describe themselves…

Instructables is a venue for showing what you make and how others can make it.

Making things is part of being human. Whether you make bikes, kites, food, clothing, protocols for biology research, or hack consumer electronics, good instructions are critical.

Instructables is a step-by-step collaboration system that helps you record and share your projects with a mixture of images, text, ingredient lists, CAD files, and more. We hope to make documentation simple and fast. Show your colleagues how to operate a machine, show your friends how to build a kayak, show the world how to make cool stuff.

1.5 times stronger…

I was cruising boing boing, when I follow a link and read this:

WARNING!
THESE ARE ABSOLUTELY NOT TOYS AND CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS! KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN! – THESES CAN EASILY CRUSH FINGERS! WE CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR INJURY OR DAMAGE CAUSED BY THESE POWERFUL MAGNETS.

And then I read

1.5 times stronger than our previous Supermagnets.

If you really need unbelievably powerful magnets, here they are.
Uses include magnetic steering of nuclear particles in homemade accelerators, levitation devices, magnetic beam amplifiers, scrap iron separators, etc.
Beware – you must think ahead when moving these magnets.

And all i can think is… I WANT TWO!

Mind you, I have no reason to own such things. I would probably hurt myself if I did get them. But man, does the LUST take hold when I look at them!

switching providers

With the problems I have been experiencing over the last couple of days with this site, and a little bit of history. I have decided to switch hosting providers.

This site is now being hosted by bluehost. So far the process of joining, and getting everything set up again has gone very smoothly and the technical support has been excellent and timely.

I hope it stays that way.
